Heart health numbers worth knowing
A handful of measurements quietly describe most of a heart's working conditions. What each dial measures, and why a clinician reads the dashboard rather than one gauge.
Ask a cardiologist what shapes long term heart risk and the answer, stripped of tools and titles, is a short list of measurable things: the pressure in the arteries, the fats traveling in the blood, the sugar circulating after meals, and the pace of the beat. Each is a dial on the same dashboard. None of them diagnoses anything alone, and none of them should be read without context. Blood pressure: the load on the walls
A reading gives two numbers. The first, systolic, is the pressure when the heart squeezes. The second, diastolic, is the pressure between beats, when the muscle refills. It travels in particles, and the letters name the packages: LDL particles carry fats outward to tissues and are the fraction most associated, at sustained high levels, with the buildup inside artery walls, while HDL participates in carrying fats back for disposal. Blood glucose: the sugar in circulation
Glucose is the quick fuel in the blood, and the body keeps it within a narrow band. Screening values such as fasting glucose or the longer view given by HbA1c belong to a laboratory and the clinician who ordered it.
